How It Works — Six Simple Steps
Prepare Your Work
Your work must be completely dry (bone dry) before firing — no damp or freshly made pieces. Please handle with care and make sure your work is signed with your maker’s mark. Work without a maker’s mark will not be fired.
Know Your Clay and Glaze
We’ll ask which clay and glaze (if applicable) you’ve used. Bring photos of your clay bag label and glaze container. This helps us check temperature and cone compatibility. Ensure all bases are free of glaze. Any drips or damage to kiln shelves incurs additional fees.
Pack Carefully
Pack your work securely using tissue paper, newspaper, clean bubble wrap or clean towels/fabric — no dusty or dirty packaging, please. Label your box with your name and contact number. Fruit or produce boxes are great to use.
Drop Off Your Work
Drop-offs can be made during opening hours. Please message us on 0457 667 840 before arriving to confirm someone is there. If it’s your first time firing with us, you’ll be asked to sign a Kiln Waiver. All work must be weighed and recorded on a Firing Slip at drop-off. Payment is made upon drop-off or before pickup.
We Fire Your Work
Your pieces will be unpacked, fired, and repacked into your boxes. Turnaround is typically one to two weeks, depending on kiln demand, work size, and firing type. A staff member will advise you on turnaround time upon drop off and this will be noted on your firing slip.
Pick Up Your Work
Pickups are available during opening hours or by appointment. If your work is not collected within four weeks of the advised pickup date, your work will become the property of Clae Space.
The Cookies
Kiln setters (or cookies) are clay pads placed under your work to protect shelves from glaze runs or contamination. They are required if your work includes:
runny glazes
black or blue oxides/underglazes on the base
cobalt pencils or oxides as a maker’s mark
Iron-rich clays (e.g. Buff Raku Trachyte, Feeneys Hand Building Clay).
There are a limited number of cookies on hand at the studio however we advise making your own if you are regularly using clay or glazes that need them. Pieces will not be fired if they do not have a cookie and need it. This may extend the turnaround time if relying on studio cookies.
Damage to kiln shelves due to glaze runs will incur a $75 replacement fee per shelf.
Turnaround & Terms
Turnaround time is usually within one - two weeks. Unexpected delays (like power outages) can occur. All firings are at the artist’s own risk. Clae Space is not liable for any damage or loss to work fired or stored at the studio. Please see our Terms & Conditions for full details.
